What is an electrician?
An electrician is a trained professional who works with electrical wiring to ensure that products and buildings can access power. With their training, electricians understand how to handle wiring safely to keep modern amenities, like homes, cars and electrically operated goods, functioning properly. Electricians often work independently or with mentors to visit homes and offices or complete work in manufacturing facilities using their expert knowledge. The typical duties of an electrician’s job include:
- Installing and repairing electrical systems
- Understanding electrical safety
- Knowing regulations about wiring and electrical systems
- Changing outlets and light fixtures
- Repairing electrical appliances like refrigerators
- Testing electrical systems for problems
- Using hand or power tools to access wiring
What is a welder?
A welder is an expert in welding techniques that use heat from blowtorches or electrical heat devices to bond metal or other special materials together or cut it apart. People in this role create objects for manufacturing or repair existing structures within safety standards to ensure these objects and structures are stable and secure. They can weld large objects, like airplanes, or use another type of welding, called soldering, for small objects, like computer chips. Duties of this role typically are:
- Using heat tools on materials like metal or thermoplastic
- Binding materials together or cutting them apart
- Building objects of different sizes
- Wearing proper safety gear and welding attire
- Understanding safety regulations for welders
- Repairing existing structures or objects
- Reading plans or blueprints for structures and objects
